Ever since I discovered an easy way to make pumpkin puree, I have been collecting pumpkin puree recipes. Whether it is baking or making smoothies, I have used mashed bananas countless times. It’s high time I switched things up a little, like substituting mashed bananas with pumpkin puree!
I have seen a lot pumpkin spiced smoothie on the blogsphere as well as pumpkin spiced hot beverages. I like spicy beverages, case in point I like to sprinkle a lot of ground cinnamon on my coffee. The idea of pumpkin spiced beverages sound very appealing to me and I thought I would try to make a pumpkin spiced smoothie at home. Once you got the homemade pumpkin puree covered, this smoothie is a piece of cake to make. I thought I would create a little twist of the smoothie by adding cocoa powder to 1/2 the portion of the smoothie and layer the glass with a two-toned pumpkin spiced smoothie. When I crave a thick and chocolatey milkshake, I feel this smoothie is a healthier substitution. What do you think, my friends?
Do you have a healthier substitution for the food you love?
Chocolate Swirl Pumpkin Spiced Smoothie Recipe
What you’ll need to make two cups of smoothie:-
- 1 cup pumpkin puree (you can easily make your own here)
- 1 + 1/3 cups soy milk (I used Vitasoy)
- 3 tsps maple syrup (adjust to your preference)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp good quality cocoa powder (I used cocoa powder from Chocolate No. 5)
- 3 pecans, broken into smaller pieces
Method:-
Mix all the ingredients except for the cocoa powder and blend until smooth. Transfer half of the pumpkin smoothie in a measuring jug and add 2 tbsps of cocoa powder into the remaining smoothie in the tumbler. Blend until well mixed. Fill the glass in rotation of the plain pumpkin spiced smoothie and the chocolate flavoured smoothie. Garnish with pecan pieces and serve immediately.
