I can’t believe I have been forking out money to buy hazelnut spread. If you’ve tried making this at home, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s seriously easy and requires only 6 ingredients which are highly accessible in any supermarkets, if not already available in our pantries.
This tweaked recipe from Super Food Ideas is labelled as low fat which is a yay to me and my beloved as we go through nutella like no tomorrow (as if you wouldn’t ).
Some of you may agree that some food tastes a little different ( my polite way of saying “off”) when it is low fat. Well, this is not the case with my homemade nutella. The only difference (in an acceptable way, of course) is you can feel the grittiness from the hazelnut meal with the homemade version. So you will end up with a “crunchier” nutella than the commercial one you are accustomed to.
Homemade Chocolate Hazelnut Spread (Nutella)
(tweaked slightly from Super Food Ideas February 2005 – Issue 56)
The original recipe calls for 1/2 cup skim milk powder, 1 tbsp cornflour and 3/4 cup milk while the quantity of the remaining ingredients stayed the same as the recipe below. Unfortunately, I don’t consume milk powder which therefore, omitted from the recipe. To compensate the absence of milk powder, I have increased the quantity of cornflour and milk instead.
Makes about 1 cup
1/3 cup ground hazelnut meal
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 cup low fat milk
2 tbsps cornflour
1 tbsp vegetable oil (or any flavourless oil)
Method for Spread:
1. Combine all the ingredients in a small pot.
2. Over medium flame, cook the mixture and stir constantly with a heatproof whisk. (Don’t fret when you see lumps as they will smooth out as you stir). Cook for about 5 minutes or until thickened.
3. Remove from the heat and transfer to a heatproof airtight container. Set aside, uncovered to cool to room temperature.
Storage information as per Super Food Ideas – Once cooled, store spread in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 30 days.
